Google Maps – Is Your Business Listed Accurately?

Under Marketing

A few months ago, I showed you how to use the Google Map feature to gain local marketshare from the search engines quickly. Today, I want to talk about making sure that your listing is accurate. It’s important to make sure that your listing in Google maps is accurate, because even if you have not input the information yourself, the Google search engine can and often does pull information from third party sources. There are often times that these results are not accurate.

The accuracy of your listing is critical when it comes to your marketing, after all you don’t want customers going to the wrong location only to find that you are not there.

How can you check the accuracy? It’s simple.

Process of the Google Map Accuracy Check

Enter your company’s name into the Google Maps search engine along with the city and state. Are you there? If not take a few moments to enter your information, after all, it’s free and can drive potential new customers and clients to you. I walk you through step-by-step through the process. If you are listed, verify that your address and telephone number are correct in the listing.

Process of Correcting an Inaccurate Google Map Listing

If your listing is incorrect and you were the one that entered the information or, if you have claimed your listing, you can login to edit your information. The modifications are fairly simple.

If you did not enter the information, you must claim the listing. It is not as hard as it sounds. Just follow the following steps:

  • Step 1: Click on the result link
  • Step 2: You will see an “edit” option in the pop-up window
  • Step 3: You will be asked if you are the owner, you will need to confirm that this is true.
  • Step 4: You will be provided with a link once you confirm that you are the owner, and you will need to click this link.
  • Step 5: You will be taken to the Google Business Center; if you don’t have an account you will need to create one.
  • Step 6: You will now need to verify that you are the owner by either telephone or mail. Telephone is obviously a quicker method.

Once you have verified, you can edit the listing. When editing your listing, make sure that you use a strong title as well as search keywords within your description. This will help you in the search results. Make sure you are clear in your description, but remember it’s your marketing message for those looking for you products or services.
