The Entrepreneur and the Shopkeeper
Here is an interesting article titled Entrepreneur vs. Shopkeeper – What’s the Difference? It talks about the two polar opposite roles in running a business. If you have a home-based business, you’ll likely find yourself in both the roles of entrepreneur AND shopkeeper at least in the beginning. When you start a home based business, you usually have to do everything at first – right down to the bookkeeping. How do you balance those two roles?
With most home based businesses you have time for both if you plan for it. Do whatever is necessary to be the “shopkeeper” and keep the business functioning. But plan some quality time for your “entrepreneur” role as well. Work up a schedule where you can allocate some devoted time for that entrepreneur role. That role will be the one that is going to grow your business, not the shop-keeper role.
As your business grows, you can work on diminishing your shopkeeper role(s). As your revenue allows it, work on outsourcing those shopkeeper roles where it makes sense to do so. Whenever it makes sense to pay someone else to do something, it will leave more time for your entrepreneur.
